Rick Waghorn

Rick Waghorn returned to his family's Norfolk roots when he joined the Evening News in 1992 as a sports reporter. Rick became the paper's Norwich City football writer at the start of the 1993-94 season... just in time to follow the Canaries on their epic UEFA Cup adventure. After 13 seasons following City for the Evening News, Rick left Archant in 2005 to set up myfootballwriter.com.

Martin sets his sights on righting a few wrongs against Southend – with or without other Russell

February 22nd, 2010 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

“We go in one goal behind and we’re still in it; at half-time we still think we can win it. And then the decision is a disappointing one and we couldn’t get anything after that. So we’re a bit disappointed by that; but, hopefully, on Tuesday night we’ve got a chance to put that right.”

Lambert looks set to appeal as the Russell red card row rumbles on long into the night

February 21st, 2010 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

“It’s just a woeful decision. Woeful. He’s not even looking at the late – no, I’ll stick up for Darel all day long. I don’t think it’s worthy of a red – I don’t even think its worthy of a yellow. A free-kick? Maybe.”

Lambert left to see red after Russell’s early exit helps condemn City to a rare home defeat

February 20th, 2010 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

“How the referee thinks that’s a red card – it’s absolutely bizarre,” added Canary boss Lambert. “Sometimes you get a game that’s too big for some people and I think that was too big for him.”

Deliver a Lerner… perfick. Deliver a Hicks and the chamber clicks over again…

February 18th, 2010 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

Marry another Randy Lerner to a Paul Lambert and that’s the Villa model; if ‘Uncle Joe’ Kosich delivers that then City’s medium-term prayers might be answered. Deliver a Bill Hicks, however…

Why the reaction to the use of the ‘A’ word? Cos it threatens the rock upon which City is built

January 26th, 2010 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

Given the volume of small, Norfolk businesses whose livelihood is in some way, shape or form entwined to the continuing fortunes of their local football club, taking them to the cleaners to the tune of two pence in the pound whilst the players’ wages are ring-fenced by Football League law would destroy any sense of Norwich City being a ‘community’ club.

I don’t know. And I suspect very few people do, either. Is Lambert a serial jumper?

January 7th, 2010 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

Judging managerial moves on the back of the bookies’ odds is fraught with peril; so it would be distinctly rash to leap to any sure-fire conclusions that Norwich City boss Paul Lambert was suddenly Turf Moor bound just because PaddyPower says so.

Lambert all-too wary of an agent’s silver tongue as Askou sits it out for next six weeks

January 1st, 2010 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

“You get some good ones – don’t get me wrong. But you get DVDs galore – and, honestly, they look world beaters. And as somebody once said, you get them over and they look like a panel beater.”

Drury full of festive good cheer as City prepare to grind out another big win en route to the top

December 27th, 2009 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

“I feel as good as I have done for a long while – it’s just a case of playing regular games,” said Drury, ahead of the Boxing Day clash with the Lions. “I’ve probably played as many games this season already as I have done in two seasons total so I’m feeling fantastic.

Martin more than happy to shrug off the one that got away with the one that sealed a famous win

December 21st, 2009 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

“I don’t really know what I was doing,” he joked afterwards. “I just tried to get a strong contact on it and it just ended up skidding off my foot… And I’d just thought: ‘Goal!’ I saw Wes with the ball and thought if I just keep onside here I can just tap this in at the far post, but it didn’t work out.”

Word on Lambert’s lips tonight was extraordinary as City turn up the power

December 21st, 2009 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

“I thought they were extraordinary,” said City boss Paul Lambert, afterwards as the Canaries racked up their seventh straight home success and continued to drive onwards and upwards. “Particularly after Southampton. To go out there; the long journey back and everything. I thought they were extraordinary.”
